These are easy space science projects for 1st and 2nd grade kids they can make themselves with your help. Of course if you need fast and easy, you can also buy space science project kits.

Make a 3D Model of the Solar System for a School Project

Use styrofoam balls to create each of the planets. Research each planet and find out what distinctive feature each planet has. Earth has oceans, Saturn has rings around it, and Jupiter has a giant red spot that looks like an eye. One hint is that you can cut out the center of some old CDs to create Saturn’s rings. You can include Pluto as the last planet. Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006, but it marks the end of the known planets in the solar system. Make the sun the largest piece in the model. Write small name tags and attach them onto your planets. Test your knowledge by trying to put each planet in order around the sun without looking at any notes.

space ship model kitSpace Ship Models and Mars Rover Paper Models

NASA has exploration robots soaring through our solar system in order to learn more about it. Research these space vehicles like the Galileo, the Genesis, the Cassini, and the Lunar Prospector. There are many good photos of these vehicles on the NASA website. Take colored paper, scissors, and glue and cut out the basic shapes of your chosen vehicles. Fold the pieces and glue them together. Once you have created your models, write up a short information summary on an index card. Paint a shallow box black with white stars and maybe some planets. Pin your paper models and their cards in the box to create a diorama.

solar system board gameSolar System Board Games

Brainstorm and write down some board or card games that could be focused on the solar system. One example could be a memory match card game. Make a deck of cards with pictures of objects in the solar system. Make a matching card for each object with written facts. Mix up the cards and lay them out face down. Turn one over and try to find its match. Another example would be space monopoly. Instead of properties, use planets, space stations, asteroids, and other objects in space. Invent your own form of space money. Instead of railroads, use space exploration vehicles. For an alternative to going to jail, create a go to the moon space on the board.

Fun Facts

  • Our solar system is composed of the sun and everything that revolves around it.
  • Earth is the only planet that has liquid water on the surface.
  • The solar system is full of cosmic dust, meteoroids, asteroids, and comets.
  • It took NASA’s Voyager One 26 years to reach the edge of the solar system.
